Counselling!~

12th November 2009, Thursday
Today is the last day of our 4 days intensive Counselling Course... This course was organised by OHR and 4 of us from RSO attended the course... I'm glad that I had the chance to attend the course...coz it was a very meaningful and good learning experience for me... nv did thot that a counsellor job is so difficult and important until after today... Reali wanted to learn the basic skills of counselling ppl or perhaps frends and families....hehe

It was an intensive 4 days experience where there were role-plays and interactive sessions with the whole class....at first all of us were reali shy....but on the last day....many o us were more open up and it was a really great experience for all of us...hehe

The 2 counsellors who taught us were really good as well... they were both from Fei Yue Family Services and they shared many interesting experiences that they have encountered with us...learned many many new things from this course and even had thoughts to become a counsellor myself....hahahaha

After the course, we are considered Para-Counsellor where we are equipped with the basic skills of counselling... We learned how to probe questions and also Etiquettes and Codes of Conduct as a counsellor...there are several do's and dont's of counselling... One very important point i noted after the course was that eye-contact and empathy is very important... Also...we must not be judgemental and put our own values and opinions into others... meaning to say...we shld not give suggesstions/opinions to our clients... During the counselling session, we should also asked more open-ended questions for our clients to talk more and not just onli asked close-ended questions where the clients would onli give a yes-no ans....hehe Tat's very important...coz in counselling...u want the person to talk to you more...sometimes the clients realli just want a listening ear rather than an advicer....hehehe

Must always rem, as a counsellor, u're a listening ear to your client and not an advicer!! hehehe
